My aunt (minerva viergutz) taught at this school.  I can't remember the dates, but I do have a picture of her with her class.  I'm going to have to find it so I can send you a copy.  Thanks, Susan

Sunburst Home

I too was there in the late 70`s.

The picture shown is the house across the highway from the old school. After almost 30 years the name eludes me. What I do remember is the main houseparents at the house at that time had a big ole timber wolf and the walkers were also there.

I started out in Gander Unit.

I still to this day remember the day Mr. English died from a massive heart attack in Love Unit which was 1 of the girls units.

Do they still have the ski lift rope....I almost broke my neck the 1st time I tried using that thing.

Mr.Sisco wouldnt happen to still be a teacher in the school would he.

I was at Sunburst Youth Home 1975-1977 (the house across the highway was Stehr Cottage) until I moved across the Black River to the River Ranch which was a small horse farm. I came in contact with people who were there from fall of 1975 to summer of 1977 until I graduated from there. I remember the basement of the old 3 story building on grounds was used as a recreation center for all the kids. Mr. Sisco was my teacher the time that I was there he was instrumental in getting me to get an education and getting me to graduate high school in my hometown in 1977. I remember the ski hill, as well as all the cottages, I worked in the kitchen of the main bldg and washing dishes as well as delivering the lunch & dinner carts to all the cottages, here is what I can remember after 30+ yrs since, I would like to go back one day soon to visit those serving as house parents.....the Carlsons from Wausau, WI; and the Andersons from Chippewa Falls, WI were at Stehr Cottage. I do not remember the house parents while at River Ranch until May of 1977 would like to hear from others who also memories of this place. In the early 1930 I was 3-4 years old and my mothers aunt, Leone durst worked there for the Stuckies.  I remember it so well because at the time it had carpet on the floor and electric lights. My wife, Evelyn, also worked in 2 or 3 different units there 8-9 years when it was sunburst. Yes, Minerva Verguts also taught at Lone Pine School (north of highway 10 on Co. Hwy I) where all the durst family went to school.   Don Schutte
