Tripp, Orlando G. (5 Feb 1837 - 5 Jun 1908)

Orlando G. Tripp died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S.M. Marsh Friday Jun 5, 1908, aged 71 yeas and 4 months. His death was due to heart disease from which he had suffered more or less for a number of years. Mr. Tripp was born at Schroon Lake, Essex Co., N.Y., Feb. 5, 1837. When 25 years of age he went from New York to Davenport, Iowa, engaging in rafting on the Mississippi River. In 1869 he came to Humbird, Clark County as manager of a grain warehouse for Hewett and Woods. Later he ran a drug store in Humbird for a time, also carried on a freighting business between Neillsville and Humbird until the railroad was built into Neillsville. He moved her in 1880 and engaged in the logging business. He was appointed to the office of Clerk of the Circuit Court to fill a vacancy and afterward elected and served another term. In 1892 he moved to Florida, having spent several winters there previously. He engaged in orange culture there, returning to Neillsville after the freezing of the orange groves in 1899. He went back to Florida in 1904 , making his home there though returning here for an occasional visit.

He always retained his interest in Neillsville, having taken quite an active hand in building up this place. He built the dangers and Gilman residences and re-modeled several other houses, doing in a quiet way a great deal of the town. He was a man of unobtrusive manner, and a good citizen though for some years past, age and ill health made him less active than in the earlier years of his life. He leaves a wife, a step-daughter, Mrs. S.M. Marsh, a sister, Miss Marion Tripp, and a little grandson, Spencer Abbot of Milford, Iowa.

The funeral services were held Sunday at the home of S.M. Marsh, Rev. W.T. Hendren of Greenwood officiating. The remains were taken to Humbird on the train; accompanied by relatives and friends. Judge O’Neill conducted the final ceremonies at the grave, burial taking place in the family lot in the Humbird Cemetery.
