Schmidt, John G. ( - 11 Aug 1901)

The community (Neillsville, Clark County) was shocked Sunday afternoon by the announcement that John G. Schmidt had been found dead in his bed in his room over the marble shop. It seems that he had been about the streets about 9 o'clock in the forenoon, although he had been ailing from dysentery for a week previous. About eleven o'clock he went to bed and sent for some soothing powders. He took one and seemed to feel easier and went asleep. About two o'clock in the afternoon Fred Glass called at his rooms, and found him dead. Justice Dudley summoned as jurors: Carl Rabenstein, S.B. Calway, Jos. Davis, Richard Townsend, Robert Weeks and E.E. Crocker and an inquest was held. The jury found that Mr. Schmidt came to his death through hemorrhage of the bowels. About a week before his death he went out to help thresh and being unused to the work he overdid and did not recover.

Mr. Schmidt had been in the marble business in this city for a good many years and was well liked by all who knew him. He was a man of refinement of taste, a lover of music and quiet and gentlemanly in his way. His wife (Amelia Rossman Schmidt 1867-27 Apr 1897) died about ten years ago, leaving a little daughter Katie who survives him. He was greatly attached to his little girl whose sorrow for her father'' death is pathetic. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the Episcopal Church, under the auspices of the Workman Lodge, of which he was a member.

Thanks you for this information. It was very helpful. I wanted to know what happened to Katie's Dad (John G. Schmidt). I noticed on the census records that my 3X Great Grandma Catherine Rossman had Katie in her home in 1905 and in the 1910 census as well. Reading this post explains it all. Thanks-Sally
